Reflections on Morricone

The recent loss of one of film’s most iconic composers, Ennio Morricone, left many reflecting on his profound impact on film, the world of composing, and pop culture. His work and influence spanned decades and genres, with artists from Hans Zimmer to Danger Mouse drawing on his style and approach. In honor of his prolific career as a composer and musician, here are a couple of Sonicity co-founder Mischa Santora’s favorite Morricone works:

Once Upon a Time in America

Haunting, dark, foreboding, and epic, the score for Once Upon a Time in America drives the soaring emotional underpinnings of each scene. Due to the film’s long production time, most of Morricone’s score was completed prior to filming scenes and was played on set during production - a technique that undoubtedly enhanced the emotional impact.

The Untouchables

The Untouchables score is action packed and dramatic, with soaring brass fanfare. Iconic, much like Morricone himself, The Untouchables score received a BAFTA and a Grammy Award in 1988.
